Kentucky EMS for Children Project

Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) is a national initiative working to ensure that state-of-the-art emergency care is available for all ill or injured children. Designed to improve the entire spectrum of pediatric care, from primary prevention to acute care and rehabilitation, EMSC builds upon existing EMS systems. A Federal EMSC grant program, jointly administered by the Health Resources and Services Administration's Maternal and Child Health Bureau and the Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, supports state and local action. One of the goals of the Kentucky EMS For Children Project (KYEMSC) is to assist EMS field providers to improve their pediatric skills and to become child advocates in the larger sense – by increasing public awareness of EMSC and by coalition building in local communities to increase the health and safety of the children of the Commonwealth. For more information about how KYEMSC can help your service check out our Fact Sheet (PDF 134 KB)!

The Safe Infants Act
The Kentucky Safe Infants Act allows parents to leave babies younger than three days old at a safe place. No one will call the police, and no one will ask for your name.

So if you are pregnant and feel that you can't keep your baby, don't leave the baby in a dangerous situation.  There is help!

If you do not contact the Kentucky Cabinet for Families and Children within 30 days after leaving your baby in a safe place, the Cabinet will begin the process of ending your parental rights.

We now have available PowerPoint and video presentations for training police, fire, and EMS crews about the "Abandoned Infant Act". Contact Tom Taylor for training materials, and "Burch Baby" packets.
